Every site calls for a different blend of design, security and management. Explore the measures that may form part of a risk led plan.
1Lighting & sightlines
Assess coverage, colour rendition, shadows, sightlines and the relationship between planting, routes and lighting. Recommendations may include better positioned lighting, maintenance and clearer views.
2Boundaries & access
Consider fencing, secure gates, access control and the role of bollards or barriers where the risk calls for them. Design for legitimate movement, emergency access and long-term management.
3CCTV & response
Review camera purpose, coverage, monitoring, signage, maintenance and the response process. CCTV is considered alongside natural surveillance and the people responsible for acting on information.
4Environmental improvement
Address neglected spaces through landscaping, repairs, waste and cycle storage, clear ownership, active use and ongoing stewardship. Small changes can support wider interventions.
5Security specification
Where relevant, assess doors, windows, locks, glazing and other products against applicable tested and certified standards, with appropriate technical specialists.
6Partnership & management
Connect physical measures to reporting, resident engagement, targeted activity, maintenance schedules, funding and a clear delivery plan.
Assessments can draw on the current Secured by Design guides for homes and other settings. Where a product specification is appropriate, relevant examples include PAS 24:2022 for doors and windows and LPS 1175 for rated security products. The applicable standard and rating depend on the risks and the latest guidance. A Wulfrun review does not itself confer Secured by Design accreditation.
